One childcare apprentice born every minute at esg.

During National Apprenticeship Week, esg. flew the flag for childcare apprentices with their childcare bonanza and open day in Wolverhampton.

The aim of the event was to give local young people interested in childcare the chance to experience a day in the life of a nursery nurse, trying their hand at bottle feeding, nappy changing, creating with play dough, painting and cookery.

But it wasn’t all fun and games, with an important lesson learned in how they could turn their interest into a career. They met with apprentices currently on their course as well as the tutors, assessors, recruitment officers and local employers who champion work-based learning and who could tell them first hand of the benefits of earning while you learn.

The event was well attended and even had to be extended so that more young people who wanted to visit the centre after their day at school could do so. Many also brought along their parents with them so they too could see the training on offer and the alternative career path for their sons and daughters to consider.

Lisa Calder, Training Coordinator at esg., told us: “We’ve been building great relationships with our local schools for over eight years now. We love taking part in careers events in schools and jobs fairs to let young people know that the vocational route is a very worthwhile and rewarding experience. We get them work experience, qualifications, a good reference and we support them in finding a job at the end of their time with us.”

esg. (Employment and Skills Group) is a vocational training and welfare to work provider. They work closely with local schools, colleges and Connexions to offer young people an alternative option to university, another route to their chosen career. They also foster great relationships with employers encouraging them to take on apprentices and showing them the benefits of taking them on.

Donna Holness, a Connexions Adviser for Schools and Colleges said after the event: “I’d like to thank esg. very much for organising the careers event. Student feedback was very positive, they thought it was extremely useful and definitely helped them with their career planning.”

In addition to childcare esg. specialises in a number of curriculum subjects like business administration, health and social care and retail, and in Wolverhampton we help hundreds of young people each year to gain the skills and experience they need to succeed in their chosen profession.
